Reviews of "BLEAGH! A book about values"
I don’t typically start reviews with this kind of statement, but in this case, it really does apply: I LOVE THIS BOOK! Allow me to elaborate. I have been teaching my kids for years that when a child (or teen or adult, etc.) they are interacting with does or says something mean to them (or anyone else) it is typically because they don’t feel good about themselves. Why do I teach them this? Because my life philosophy begins and ends with compassion. BLEAGH! A book about values centres around this (and other) themes.
BLEAGH! A book about values is, in short, a gem. It features an unusual and sympathetic main character in “Bleagh” (love that name!), the illustrations are excellent and kid-friendly, and the life lessons in this book just happen to overlap quite neatly with some of positive messages I try to reinforce in my children. I highly recommend BLEAGH! (I still giggle every time I say that out loud!) for parents of young children, librarians, and preschool, kindergarten, or early elementary school teachers as a great resource for teaching socialization skills. We often talk and write about how we want to change the world for the better, filling it with thoughtfulness, empathy, compassion and kindness. We struggle with these things ourselves – how do we teach it to our kids?
Bleagh! provides a glimpse of how we might do that. It manages to achieve something we find remarkable: It’s both realistic and idealistic. It presents circumstances that are believable and all-too-familiar, and reveals to the reader how they might be dealt with in a positive, enriching way. Even as adults, we can’t help but notice the book gently compelling us to consider multiple perspectives, to be patient, to be kind. It feels natural, not preachy. It dawns on us that we’re not very different from children sometimes. We face the same issues and concerns. We have the same needs. Read Bleagh! to a child in your life – your nephews, nieces. If we want a more thoughtful, empathetic world, we could start with our kids. - Visakan Veerasamy, Poached Mag |
Bleagh opens the eyes of young readers and helps them discover the importance of living each day with values. I especially like that each individual value is highlighted with a gold badge. This helps to make the lesson clear so children can easily grasp each concept and demonstrate it in their own life.

I must say both Ash & Ayd were inevitably taken in by the name of the book, which they derived great joy in exclaiming 'BLEH! BLEH! BLEH!' throughout the course of the book...I loved how the book weaved in the importance of six values - empathy, tolerance, creativity, cooperation, appreciation and integrity - into the story. And best of all, the scenarios in the book make it much easier for me to explain the meaning of the values to the boys!
In all, BLEAGH! presents a set of fine mini-stories about values within a story, and the colourful illustrations and virtues extolled will no doubt please parents seeking to instill values in the very young. - Kelvin, cheekiemonkies |
This cute new book from KiteReaders is formatted to look brilliant on your device screen, and my son and I enjoy reading it on the computer through our Kindle Library. If you have a little one who will be attending school, camp, or any other group activity, BLEAGH! is a fun way to share how to be compassionate and accepting of others.
BLEAGH! has vivid illustrations with lots of colors and details, and my son especially liked the tropical setting and little hidden surprises on each page. The rhyming story is fun to read aloud, and the plot is easy for kids to follow. Even though this book tackles an important and serious issue, the author's gentle approach makes the theme of BLEAGH! easy to understand. - Anne, Learning Table Reviews |
When reading with Lil Pumpkin, I related the scenarios back to her own experiences in preschool and at social gatherings. She's already familiar with the concepts of the values, as we've been instilling them in her since young, but now I feel that it's reinforced even more each time we read the book.

Children all love a good book and Sophie was delighted to read about how the children welcomed Bleagh as they learn, play and work together as a team despite coming from different backgrounds. With some prompting in between, she quickly grasped how one should show empathy and acceptance even though we may be different. The scenarios are easily relatable as she attends the child care and is not unfamiliar to concepts where she has to work with her friends to finish a tasks.

“BLEAGH” is a delightful read with vibrant colours, cheerful narratives and wonderful character designs. Most of all, the book is a light-hearted take on the issue of social acceptance and inculcates to children, the importance of looking past discrimination. Definitely a book worth adding to the kids' book collection.
